Located in the Belgian province of Limburg the notoriously deep sand track of Lommel hosted this weekend’s 14th round of the 2019 World Motocross Championship.

The MXGP class saw HRC’s Tim Gajser once again top the podium with two second place finishes and a further increase of his lead of this year’s championship. The Slovenian HRC’s star now leads the championship by 187 points with four rounds to go.

There was also HRC success in the MX2 class as Calvin Vlaanderen who battled hard through the relentless conditions and was rewarded with third overall and 36 valuable World Championship points.

It was a great weekend, finishing two-two for first overall in Lommel. My riding was good, especially because in the past I’ve struggled here but we’ve worked hard this year with the team and it really paid off. We’ve prepared a lot better for these tough conditions and it was certainly helped by two good starts, just like we have done so often this year. I wasn’t able to win a moto but I rode smoothly and smart and I minimised any mistakes. I’m just so happy to win here in Lommel, because it is a special GP and a good test and just shows how much I’ve progressed as a rider.

I felt good on the track as it was really deep sand and I like these conditions. My riding also went well, I just struggled out of the gate and that put me behind. Unfortunately I crashed in the first moto when I’d made my way all the way back to 12th and that pushed me outside the top 20 again. I worked my back to 15th, which isn’t bad but I really wanted to get a good start and battle with the top guys as I feel on this track it is possible. Second moto was very similar, starting around 19th but I made my way up to ninth and finished there. Fifteen and nine isn’t bad but I wanted more, so I’m going to put this behind me and concentrate on Imola now.

It was a pretty good day today, although I was definitely disappointed after my first moto when I finished seventh. I had a small crash which dropped me down a few spots and that was frustrating. In the second moto I actually had some fun on the track, even with the tough conditions. My plan is to always have fun and the first moto I really didn’t enjoy it, but in race two things went a lot better. I flowed around the track with a good rhythm and even though I finished second, I didn’t expect to be on the podium. Only when they wrote on my pitboard near the end did I realise and obviously I’m really happy to finish second and have my best overall of the season.

We came into this weekend’s event missing all of our riders in the Honda 114 Motorsports team due to injury, but positively had high hopes for our EMX250 championship leader - red plate holder Stephen Rubini. Also for EMX250 was Buildbase Honda Racing’s Josh Gilbert, then RedMoto Assomotor’s MX2 riders Mathys Boisrame and Brent van Doninck.

Rubini had a solid first race battling his way from ninth on lap one to finish in fourth position and still holding the red plate. Race two didn’t go the Frenchman’s way with crashes spoiling his chances of a podium finish. Josh Gilbert pushed very hard in race one to climb his way up from 20th on lap one to finish the race in a credible 10th overall. He wasn’t able to make the same progress through the pack in race two, finishing in 16th.

In the MX2 class Mathys Boisrame’s first race saw a crash spoil his changes of progressing from his 9th position in the early stages. And race two was a similar outcome giving the Frenchman 15th overall. His teammate Brent van Doninck suffered an unfortunate crash on the second lap of timed practice and was taken to hospital for scans, but couldn’t compete today in Lommel due to the FIM ruling regarding a knock out.

Team Honda SR Motoblouz had a good day in the Lommel sand, finishing fifth in the MXGP qualifying race and backed this up on Sunday with a fifth overall in the Grand Prix on his CRF450R. The Belgian is now ninth in the championship with four rounds to go.

Good news and congratulations go to HRC’s MX2 rider Calvin Vlaanderen who battled hard throughout the day and his efforts paid off with a second place on the podium. His MXGP teammate Tim Gajser continued his form with the GP overall win - his ninth overall win of the season. Great to also see Honda’s in first a second place on lap one of MXGP race two.

A tough weekend in the deep sand of Lommel but we all remain focused on the respective championships and look forward to further success.
