Stephan Rubini heads Honda’s MX2 results in Trentino

In the MX2 class the CRF250Rs were out in force. Race one saw four Hondas cross the line within less than four seconds of each-other, but it was race two that would decide who would be the leading Honda in the overall results.

It was Team Honda Assomotor’s Stephen Rubini who battled hard to improve from 10th on lap one to cross the line in seventh overall, giving the Frenchman 9th overall and 24 valuable World Championship points.

Stephen’s teammate Alvin Östlund finished the day just four points away from Rubini with 10th overall. It was then Honda 114 Motorsport’s Bailey Malkovich in 11th and stand-in rider Morgan Lesiardo in 12th. Once again, four Honda’s bunched together in the final points today.

The gate drops on next and final round of the 2020 FIM World Motocross Championship in four days time here in Trentino and Honda’s MX2 racers are hoping to finish the season on a high.

Stephen Rubini ¹¹⁸

A difficult day for me, but still going in the right direction compared to last Sunday. I felt very good on the bike and could ride with confidence and aggression on my CRF250R.

In the first race I had a little crash at the start but had some good lap times. In the second race I rode a little better. I started mid-pack but managed to come back to 7th which gave me 9th overall.

Still not where I want to be, but I’m confident that the results can come in the future.

My qualifying was better than last Sunday’s, but I expected that with more track experience. I had an awesome start in the first race, but made a couple of mistakes on the first lap which put me down in third position. I was there for half of the race, but crashed half way through and couldn’t find my rhythm and ended up in 12th.

I had another good start in race two and put in some good first first laps, but started to struggle as the race went on, but still 12th isn’t too bad which gave me 11th overall.

Qualifying was better than last Sunday and in the first moto I got a good start and managed to keep my flow around the track and I was feeling really good with the CRF250R.

Unfortunately, I crashed in the second moto. I was hoping for a top ten overall but I made things very difficult - picking myself up from dead-last. I came back to 14th which surprised me and I was quite pleased with that as I passed a lot of riders.

I know that without that crash a top-ten finish would be more than possible. 12th overall is OK though and I’m looking forward to next Sunday to see if I can improve.

Tim and Honda winning the MXGP Championship are worthy World Champions and quite rightly so.

That’s four titles within the last six years. All of the dedication, skill and continuous desire to be the best is rewarded today. Huge congratulations to Tim and Team HRC.

Race win, overall win and World Championship win all in one day gives reason for the biggest of celebrations, but I think we will wait until after the final race concludes in just a few days time on Sunday.
