Team Honda 114 Motorsports’ Mitchell Evans rode extremely well in both races at the MXGP of Portugal to get himself on the podium for the second time in his maiden MX2 season. The Australian rider actually led race two for the first four laps in what was another big step for this young rookie. Eventually he settled for third place as the chequered flag was waved, but combined with his fourth in race one, it was enough to see him on the third step of the podium, just like achieved at the first MX2 round in Argentina.
Redmoto Assomotor duo Mathys Boisrame and Brent van Doninck also had their best rides of the season with Mathys getting a fifth in moto one, while Brent was sixth in race two. Unfortunately Mathys wasn’t able to add to his tally in the second moto after he was involved in a tangle on the start straight and had to remount in last position, but it was still a positive weekend as the young French rider is getting to grips with this competitive MX2 class.
These riders now head to St Jean D’Angely, France where they’ll be hoping to continue this good run of form at the seventh round of the 2019 MX2 world championship.
