The new MXGP of La Comunitat Valenciana produced another excellent weekend of racing, with Honda riders putting themselves inside the top 10 in the MXGP, MX2 and EMX250 classes.

Team Honda 114 Motorsports’ Hunter Lawrence led the way with his fifth overall, after two fifth place moto results on a track that didn’t really favour the Australian. He sits in fourth place in the championship as the series now has a weekend off before the MXGP of Trentino. Bas Vaessen also showed encouraging speed after missing out at Valkenswaard with a shoulder injury with his two 11th place finishes for 10th overall while Calvin Vlaanderen of Team HRC kept up his consistent performances with a pair of sevenths. Unfortunately Vamo Racing’s Marshal Weltin wasn’t able to add to his point’s haul, despite running consistent laptimes in his two motos.

The next round of the world championships is in a fortnight’s time is Arco di Trento, Italy which is known as being a rocky, tight and twisty track nestled in the Alps.

I was feeling a bit better than at Valkenswaard despite the track being so fast and wide open. It seems to be a bit of a weakness of mine, these type of tracks, but after struggling in timed qualifying we made some improvements and I thought were much better for the races. I don’t think I’m back to 100% yet and I’m still lacking those explosive bursts that I need to challenge the top guys but I’ll keep working and the next round in Italy should be good.

Overall I can say that I’m pretty satisfied with today’s results after having been very sick for the last two weeks – and therefore being unable to ride the bike as much I would have liked to. We had two good starts and two solid motos, with consistent lap-times and good speed. I think it’s a good weekend to build on: we learned a lot about the bike and gelled even more as a team, so I’m looking forward to working hard so I can be ready for Arco in two weeks.

A positive weekend for what was the first MXGP we’ve had at this Redsand MX venue. It’s great for Spain to have this track, and it’s a great addition to Bellpuig and Talavera where we’ve been previously.
In MX2 we also had a positive result for Bas Vaessen who had a personal best with two 11th place finishes. In MXGP, Arminas Jasikonis scored his season best with a 10th in race two, while Tim Gajser proved that he is clearly recovering well from his injuries and time off the bike. It was nice to see that he is building positively for the rest of the rounds after a sixth overall here.
Hunter Lawrence is coping well with the expectation that he came into the series with and I think he still sits in a strong position for the overall end-goal of winning the championship, posting a pair of fifth place moto scores on a track that doesn’t suit his style.
