The rocky hard-pack track in Orlyonok, Russia provided a real test for both man and machine but Steven Clarke, Michele Cervellin, Calvin Vlaanderen, and Alberto Forato were all able to put in season-best finishes, with Clarke the pick of the bunch as he was able to take the win in the second EMX250 moto.

In the MX2 class, an ecstatic Michele Cervellin put in the best ride of his career to finish third in the second race. After his CRF250R helped him get a great start, the Martin Racing rider kept a strong pace throughout the moto and held off any challenges as he recorded his first ever top three finish. Combined with his seventh in race one, this gave the Italian rider fourth overall, just one point off what would have been a fully deserved podium spot. Just behind him in the points was Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen, scoring one fewer than his fellow Honda rider after his six-four results.

All the riders now have a weekend off before their respective championships resume at the MXGP of Latvia, where the Kegums sand track hosts the seventh round of the series on May 12th and 13th.

It was the best race in my life up until now and I’m really happy. I was so close to the overall podium too, just one point I think and that would have been great, but I’m still really pleased with my races. Since I’ve got back to full-time training after my knee injury, I’ve been getting better and better, so when it is a track like this, a track like we find in Italy, I knew I would do well here. In the first moto I slipped a little bit and that one position cost me a podium, but the season is long and we will try every round to make that top three happen.

Overall I’m happy with how this round went. After yesterday’s third place in qualifying, we were looking for two solid motos and that’s what we did. In race one, after a strong start I kind of lost my rhythm and couldn’t really find it again, so sixth wasn’t a bad result after all. I had a really good start to race two but messed up a little at turn one, so I had to make my way back to fourth. I pushed as hard as I could to get third – which would have meant a podium – but it wasn’t enough. The team worked so hard and the bike was awesome, so I look forward to Latvia!

The highlight for me was all the podium activity and the almost-podium activity across the three classes. . In MX2 it was fantastic to see Michele Cervellin have his career best result, with a third place in race two. It was a very confident and very comfortable ride, showing he’s recovered well from his early-season injury. He also just missed out on the overall podium by one point, finishing fourth overall, but can be extremely satisfied with the speed he showed.
