Mattia Pasini (Italtrans Racing Team Kalex) scored his second consecutive pole position in the Honda CBR600-powered Moto2 class, outpacing Franco Morbidelli (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex) and Alex Marquez (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex) by fractions of a second.

Indeed Mugello winner Pasini bettered championship-leader Morbidelli by just one thousandth of a second, with Marquez completing the front row a further 0.175 seconds. Moto2 qualifying was as tightly contested as ever, with 1.191 seconds separating Pasini from 22nd quickest Andrea Locatelli (Italtrans Racing Team Kalex).

Morbidelli currently leads third-overall Marquez by 49 points, with Brno winner Thomas Luthi (CarXpert Interwetten Kalex) holding second overall, 17 points behind Morbidelli. Today Luthi was fifth fastest, just three tenths off pole, so he will start the race from the middle of the second row, between impressive rookies Francesco Bagnaia (Sky Racing Team VR46 Kalex) and Fabio Quartararo (Pons HP 40 Kalex).

Isaac Vinales (SAG Team Kalex) leads row three, ahead of Brno podium finisher Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Ajo KTM) and Xavi Vierge (Tech 3 Racing Tech 3). The top ten is completed by Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Intact GP Suter).

“Qualifying today was really strange. The first tyre I used felt so good, so I was able to push very hard. Then I tried a harder race tyre, which was also not so bad. But when I tried another softer tyre I couldn’t improve, maybe the track was different or the tyre. So I was lucky to keep pole, which is so important here because the first two corners are so tight. I feel good on the bike, so I am hoping for a good race.”

“It’s a pity to miss out on pole position by such a small margin but the truth is that I am really happy because my crew worked incredibly well to improve the bike for qualifying and we made a great step from FP3. They always keep believing and keep working hard and finally we came very close to another pole position. We showed today my one lap pace is strong and I think my rhythm for the race is quite strong too, so we can start tomorrow with a lot of optimism of fighting for another win.”

“I am very happy to be on the front here in Austria because I have been close to the front all weekend and it was good to make sure we were strong in qualifying. For some reason since we returned from the summer break I have been struggling more than usual in the time attack, so the front row is an excellent result. I have demonstrated good pace for the race, so I don’t think there is any reason we can’t be finishing inside the top three in the race.”
