Since he signed for Repsol Montesa ready for the 2007 campaign, Toni Bou has firmly established himself as the best trials rider in the World. The almost undefeatable Spaniard has won both the FIM Indoor / X-Trial and Outdoor World Trial Championships for five consecutive seasons, taking his tally of World titles to ten.
An unbeatable combination of work ethic, technique and steady nerves have seen the twenty-five-year-old rise to the very top in a sport that demands the highest level of concentration, dexterity and bravery.
In his native Catalan tongue, Bou means Bull, a name perfectly suited to Toni whose fierce competitive spirit, timing, skill, and fearless attack of sections both indoors and outdoors, season after season, has cemented his reputation as the modern master of trials.
There is only one other trials rider on record with more World titles to his name – 12 (Dougie Lampkin, retired), which Bou is soon set to equal following a flying start to the 2012 season in which he once again proved to be in a class of his own.
It is impossible to fault Bou. During his double title-winning 2011 campaign the untouchable Catalan achieved a clean sweep victory, winning all six competitions in the FIM X-Trial World Championship. Bou also went on to dominate the outdoor championship with seven wins and four podiums in 11 rounds.
Last year, Bou also demonstrated why he is held in such high regard on the second day of the outdoor Grand Prix of Europe held at Isola 2000, France when heavy rain forced organisers to modify several sections of the mountain circuit. Despite the challenging conditions, Bou was in devastating form losing only a single mark to take the all-important victory well clear of his rivals.
That was just one of many moments where Bou has delivered a first class performance since joining Repsol Montesa in late 2006. He has a real affinity with his factory Montesa Cota 4RT, and when he is at his best it is as if man and machine are one. Few riders in any discipline make riding a motorcycle look quite so easy, and you often get the impression that a playful Bou is just having fun.
In reality, Bou leaves little to chance and prepares meticulously for each trial. He spends more time than any other rider observing each section, studiously playing through each movement and pre-planned route in his head. He does this with real intensity, which gives witnesses a rare window into his intellect and steely determination.
Bou has also put his determination, timing and accuracy to the test in a motorsport of a different kind. Exchanging his two wheels for four, Bou took part in one of Spain’s toughest car endurance events in December 2011. Bou was one of three professional riders, and only trials rider, selected for Repsol’s debut driver line-up in the 500-kilometre Endurance Spanish Championship in Alcañiz.
