Qualifying came to a dramatic conclusion in the all-Honda Moto2 class, with wildly different fortunes for two leading riders.

Home-fans’ favourite Sam Lowes (Speed Up Racing Speed Up) stopped out on the track mid-session … out of fuel after he’d missed his pit signal. With just enough time to get the bike back and refuelled, Lowes put in a flyer at the end of the session to claim a record-speed pole – his third this year.

Lowes’s run knocked top rookie Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40 Kalex) and runaway title leader Johann Zarco (Ajo Motorsport Kalex) to second and third.

Shortly afterwards, defending champion Tito Rabat (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex) was on a final fast lap trying to regain the front row when he crashed heavily, also bringing down Dominique Aegerter (Technomag Racing Interwetten Kalex).

Rabat qualified fourth and will race tomorrow, despite being battered and bruised.

Thomas Luthi (Derendinger Racing Interwetten Kalex) and Takaaki Nakagami (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia Kalex) were a close fifth and sixth, just ahead of Jonas Folger (AGR Team Kalex).

Lorenzo Baldassarri (Forward Racing Kalex), the improving younger brother Alex Marquez (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Kalex) and Sandro Cortese (Dynavolt Intact GP Kalex) completed the top ten.

“It’s incredible here. I really feel the support of the crowd. There was a little mistake by me – we were cutting it fine and I missed my pit board, so I ran out of fuel. We had just enough time to go out again. I knew I had the pace for a special lap. I’m really happy and really proud to get this pole position, and really looking forward to tomorrow.”

“I lost pole but it doesn’t matter – the most important thing is to have the pace for first place in the race tomorrow. We will see what happens. I think tomorrow will be a hard race, with Lowes, Zarco and Tito, and an interesting race too.”

“Rins has good pace, and also Sam, because he is at home in England and he is going to fight… so I must be careful, and stay on my two wheels to the end. I tried hard for pole, but we must be happy because yesterday I crashed, and I had some pain, but now I feel good. The front row is important, and the inside position can help for the first corner … and then we will see. It will be good and the best guy will win, and I will try to do it. But I must be clever … the points are very important now.”
